Paralegal Definition
The American Bar Association (ABA) defines a Paralegal as:
A legal assistant or paralegal is a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.
It should be noted that the terms "legal assistant" and "paralegal" are, in practice, used interchangeably.
Responsibilities
Paralegals’ responsibilities vary depending upon the type and size of organization for whom they work. Duties may include maintaining client files, drafting correspondence, performing factual research, monitoring deadlines, drafting, investigation and analyzing documents, and acting as liaison with clients and others.
Paralegal Training and Certification
To enter the paralegal profession, law firms / legal departments want to see that a candidate has education and experience. In the absence of practical legal experience such as an office support clerk or legal secretary, candidates will not receive consideration without the completion of a Paralegal training program. This education can be sought from a local university, online schools of Paralegal studies, or self-study programs that typically include Paralegal training DVDs.
Candidates should strongly consider a Paralegal certificate program as well, which can be accomplished through a Paralegal online certificate program or self-study program. Some popular Paralegal certification programs include:
Certified Legal Assistant (CLA)
Paralegal Advanced Competency Examination (PACE)
Professional Legal Secretary (PLS)
Professional Paralegal (PP)
Job Opportunities
Paralegals are needed in a variety of law-related capacities and play a vital role as they improve the overall efficiency and economy of operations. As such, many opportunities in both the private and public sectors exist for those who wish to become a Paralegal. Private sector opportunities include:
Private law firms
Corporate legal departments
Insurance companies
Estate and trust departments of large banks
Hospitals and health care organizations
Real estate and title insurance companies
